Cost: $35, 30 person max
Eastern Market Pottery invites you to spend an evening with Mark Shaprio in an intimate three-hour artist talk plus demonstration. Shapiro will start with a talk about his research on early American stoneware including his experience at the Smithsonian Artist Residency Fellowship, Black potter Thomas W. Commeraw, his recent interest in late 16th and 17th century mugs, the interviews with contemporary potters including Karen Karnes, and his decades of experience in woodfire and salt glazing at his studio in Western Massachusetts. Following the talk Shapiro will demonstrate throwing and decorating techniques inspired by his research and experience. Shapiro’s work builds bridges between communities of knowledge, drawing connections to a larger tradition of functional stoneware pottery. For Shapiro, the passion for functional pottery provides connection, intimacy, and accessibility that is unique to stoneware. This event is a unique opportunity to hear how research, observation, and exposure informs an artist’s work.
